Marrakech woke up in shock following the violent earthquake that hit Morocco during the night from Friday to Saturday. The small streets of the historic Jewish quarter of the medina, Le Mellah, are littered with debris, old buildings have collapsed and wooden roofs have been broken.

“I send my wishes for recovery to all Moroccans affected by the disastrous earthquake which took place in Morocco, (country) friend and brother. May God have mercy on those who lost their lives, and I wish a speedy recovery to the wounded. We support our Moroccan brothers by all means in this difficult day,” the Turkish president wrote on X.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, expressed “his great pain” and offered his condolences to the people of Morocco following the earthquake that hit this country.

The powerful earthquake which struck Morocco on the night of Friday to Saturday left at least 632 dead and 329 injuredaccording to a new official report from the Ministry of the Interior.

Among the injured, 51 are in serious condition, the ministry said, specifying that the earthquake caused the collapse of several buildings, particularly in the provinces and communes of al-Haouz, Taroudant, Chichaoua, Ouarzazate and Marrakech.
