There is no doubt regarding the main strength of the Lions: the attack. Last year, Detroit was 4th in yards and 5th in points scored in the league. An important force in a league increasingly focused on attacking success. As often, this success starts with the trenches. The Lions offensive line is one of the best in the NFL. Taylor Decker, Jonah Jackson, Frank Ragnow and Penei Sewell are recognized players in their positions, and the summer addition of experienced Graham Glasgow completes a high quality group.
Behind them, many young players bring their stone to the building. Last season saw the explosion of Amon-Ra St. Brown as a true No. 1 receiver. The weak spots)
The 2023 Detroit Lions have a great roster, sure, but there are a lot of factors missing to make this team a title contender. The defense, in particular, still has many weaknesses in many positions. Behind some very good players like Hutchinson or the surprising James Houston, the squad lacks depth on the front seven. Charles Harris has had just one good career season, Alex Anzalone is a decent veteran and Malcolm Rodriguez has been interesting in his first season. The rest is generally very low.
Above all, and it is important to remember, the Lions have not won a playoff game since January 5, 1992. Among the more than 70 players under contract in Detroit during the offseason, only Marvin Jones was born. An eternity. Reversing the trend will require more than player qualities, but also an iron mind. Some players have the experience of big meetings, in particular Jared Goff, but this is not the case for the staff. This problem can be impacting at the time of conclusion.

In the defensive system of the Lions, the role of Alim McNeill will also be important. First used as a nose tackle following his draft, he was logically reverted to a hybrid defensive end/defensive tackle more on the guards, which better suits his qualities as a pass rusher. Last year, he proved that he was able to put pressure on the opposing quarterback, and should do it even more in a 3-tech position ideal for his game.
Between the use of Houston or the positioning of McNeill, things are slowly falling into place for the pass rush in Detroit. Certainly solid last year, they were very handicapped by the weakness of the defensive backfield. With the improvements started in this area, combined with an increase in the pass rush, the Lions pass defense might become truly threatening.
Player to watch: Jahmyr Gibbs (RB)
The choice greatly surprised the evening of the draft. A running back selected in 12th position, the Lions’ decision is indeed surprising. But if we don’t focus on the position but on the player only, Jahmyr Gibbs will have a significant contribution to Detroit’s attack.
