The condition of the Russian army is deteriorating. Intercepted phone calls tell of the massacre of a drunken unit and the retreat of a regiment.

Kupyansk – Two secretly intercepted phone calls between Russian soldiers reveal the conditions within the Moscow army and suggest that the Ukrainian counter-offensive might be more successful than previously thought. Both conversations are said to have been made public through the Ukrainian military intelligence service. The authenticity of the recordings has not yet been independently verified.

“Were completely shredded”: Russian soldier reports drunken unit

The first of the two phone calls is regarding an anonymous soldier from the 27th Brigade of the Russian Army. His unit is said to have been in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv. The soldier and his unit had been involved in a battle for the city of Kupyansk that had been going on for weeks. The city in north-eastern Ukraine is an important railway junction with five different railway lines, some of which lead directly to Russia. Kupyansk is therefore interesting for both sides from a strategic point of view.

In the wiretapped conversation with his wife, the soldier asks if she heard what happened to the 27th Brigade. After his wife says no, the fighter says his unit was “completely shredded.” “All our people were slaughtered,” quoted as saying The Kyiv Post from the phone call. The soldier claims his comrades had been drinking in the course of their impending withdrawal from the front. The massacre only happened because his unit was “far too relaxed.”

It is unclear how many people died in the incident described in the phone call. There have been no reports of a major backlash by the Russian army in the Kharkiv region in recent weeks. Russia began concentrating its troops in Kharkiv in mid-July. In early September, the Russian Defense Ministry reported an improvement in the “tactical position” of its troops. According to the information, the Ukrainian troops are said to have suffered high losses.

Russian regiment withdraws following tankers die

In the second call, a soldier can be heard describing his recent experiences on the Russian front. There, his chief of staff asked him to verify a report that several tankers in his regiment had died in an attack. After the fears were confirmed and all five drivers were declared dead, the entire regiment was asked to withdraw. The soldier described the situation on the phone as “just shitty”. He added that it was now forced to disband all territorial defense regiments and combine them into one large regiment.

The recordings do not reveal which region the soldier is talking regarding. But the counter-offensive in the Ukraine war seems to be gaining momentum. An expert also paints a bleak picture for Russia in the current situation and described the current situation for Russia as a “retreat”. (aa)
