One trouble following another.

There are paintings that are created not because of, but in spite of. Nikita Mikhalkov also has one in his piggy bank. One of his works literally miraculously reached the viewer.

When the director came across a collection of unpublished plays by Chekhov, he was inspired by the idea of making a film based on them. Together with Alexander Adabashyan, he prepared a script for the project “Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano.” Then the director submitted an application to Goskino, and then the first difficulties began.

The director was turned down, citing the fact that he was too inexperienced to film the classic. In addition, the plan had already been drawn up, but a coincidence helped here. The filming of one of the films was disrupted, and then it was necessary to “plug” the hole with something. And the officials remembered Mikhalkov.

He quickly chose actors for his team. One of them was Evgeny Steblov. However, he got into an accident and might not film. Nikita Sergeevich decided to replace him himself, especially since the celebrity’s costume suited him well.

Other artists also frayed the master’s nerves. Lyudmila Gurchenko, with whom Mikhalkov had long dreamed of collaborating, broke her leg and had to look for a replacement. Some refused for personal reasons – they were literally taken under siege. In any case, the director achieved his goal and made a movie worthy in all respects.
