Women notice a few days before their period, an increase in their desire to eat sugary foods, such as sweets, in large quantities, so what is the reason behind this?
The reason for craving sweets before period
In this context, Dr. Amr Hassan, a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist, said that the woman’s body, 3 or 4 days before her period, is experiencing hormonal disturbances, which push her to eat sugars greedily.
Hassan explained that this condition is known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), during which women suffer from severe mood swings, due to the imbalance that occurs in the levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone.

The consultant obstetrician and gynecologist denied the validity of the common belief among women that sugars help improve mood, warning once morest excessive consumption, because they increase the risk of obesity and diabetes.

Symptoms of premenstrual syndrome
He added that mood swings are not the only symptom of premenstrual syndrome, but there are other symptoms that women suffer from, including:
Headache.
– Anxiety.
– Stress.
Flatulence
Breast swelling.
– lower back pain.

Hassan recommended women, when symptoms of premenstrual syndrome appear, to eat healthy foods in their daily meals, such as vegetables and fruits, because some minerals disturb their levels in the body during this period, such as phosphorous, calcium and magnesium.
He concluded his speech by stressing the need to follow a healthy diet during the menstrual cycle as well, to replace lost red blood cells due to bleeding associated with menstruation, and thus avoid anemia.
