This Tuesday, the Junts deputy in the Parliament, Jaume Alonso-Cuevillas, presented his resignation from his deputy status, claiming that his priority is now to focus on the legal profession. Alonso-Cuevillas, who was legal advisor to Carles Puigdemont, has assured that it is a “consensual decision” since October with the former president of the Generalitat and Junts MEP. The lawyer was one of the popular signings of the independence movement following the agitation of the process, but he declares himself “disappointed” by the way parliamentary politics works. With the departure of Cuevillas from the Junts parliamentary group, Laura Borràs loses one of her last remaining allies in Parliament. Borràs retains the position of president of the party, but his share of power has been gradually reduced, coinciding with his court conviction for breaking contracts. Jordi Turull, general secretary of Junts, is the main beneficiary of Borràs’ loss of influence.

“Today I have presented my resignation as a deputy. The office absorbs me more every day and it is a decision agreed upon with President Carles Puigdemont since last October that, for various reasons, has not been made effective until now,” he said in a message in X Cuevillas.

In a statement, Junts thanked Cuevillas for his work in the Parliament since March 2021 and his “commitment in moments of enormous importance for the country.” He also recalled that the former deputy was president of the Commission on the Statute of Deputies and a member of the Justice and Regulations commissions.

The announcement comes amid conflicts affecting two other Junts deputies who belong to Borràs’ circle of trust. This is the expulsion from the parliamentary group of the deputy Cristina Casol, who reported having suffered harassment and degrading treatment by her own party colleagues, and the still open controversy over the second secretary of the Parliament’s Bureau, Aurora Madaula, who He also filed a complaint with the Chamber’s Equality Office once morest the Junts group for alleged gender discrimination.
