A stormy parliamentary return this Monday for the deputies elected on July 31st. The parliamentarians, convened this Monday morning, elected the president of the Assembly following several hours of delay and in a chaotic atmosphere.

Amadou Mame Diop, of the Benno Bokk Yaakaar majority, obtained 83 votes out of 84 voters. The deputy-mayor of Richard-Toll therefore succeeds Moustapha Niasse at the perch following a turbulent parliamentary return.

The inaugural session began more than 4.5 hours late, chaired by the Dean of the Assembly, Aida Sow Diawara, in the absence of former President Abdoulaye Wade, 96, who struggled to bring calm.

Two points were at the origin of blockages. First the case of deputies who are also ministers: for the opposition, it is an incompatibility, they should have resigned. Then there is a discrepancy over the ballots for the position of Speaker of the Assembly.

Tempers flared several times with spades, insults, cacophony, even tussles or even a micro-snatch.

No single candidate for the opposition

The opposition, for its part, had not succeeded in agreeing on a single candidate. Snack leaders Yewwi Askan Wi had finally chosen Barthelemy Dias, mayor of Dakar as their candidate. But the mayor of Guediawaye, Ahmed Aidara, from the same camp, was also in the running. Finally, Wallu Senegal had chosen Mamadou Lamine Thiam.

During the legislative elections, the presidential camp narrowly won an absolute majority of 83 deputies, thanks to the rallying of Pape Diop. The opposition coalitions Yewwi Askan Wi and Wallu Senegal won a total of 80 seats.
