The house, which is a regional monument, is located at the address: embankment of the river. Fontanka, 145b, letter A, and was named following the former owner, merchant Alexei Shagin. The building is also known for the fact that it housed the editorial offices of the Russian Antiquity magazine.

By the beginning of the 1990s, Shagin’s house was resettled, until 2008 it was transferred from department to department, until it ended up with CJSC Non-Residential Fund Consult. A hotel project appeared in the plans, demolition began, but only the courtyard outbuildings managed to be destroyed. In 2018, the top manager of the structure of the Irkutsk Oil Company became the owner, and the process of restructuring into a hotel resumed.
