A crossroads of stories, passions and lives. A corner halfway between Arezzo, Siena and Perugia, between Tuscany and Umbria, on the route that then also leads to the Marche. Valdichiana is one of the most (..) authentic corners of the whole of central Italy. An area that has been able to defend its rural vocation, modernizing it in absolute harmony with the territory and the population. Tough people, willing to give up the comforts of the city, the ultra-fast internet connection, the thousand gyms in a square kilometer or efficient and rapid public transport. All in the name of three concepts considered (and how can we blame them) essential for one’s serenity, for that quality of life that, in many urban areas, is now forgotten: little traffic, good air and stress reduced to a minimum.
A small earthly paradise that the Democratic Party, an environmentalist on alternate days (depending on convenience), wants to destroy. At the center of a dispute that led the hamlet of Bettolle, in two out of three sections, to give victory to the center-right, a grotesque idea of development. A sensational fact, in an area where the left has always governed, commanded and decided. In the end, the municipality of Sinalunga (a town of 12 thousand inhabitants, where the former Minister of Health, Rosy Bindi, was born) saw the victory of the center-left. But that rebellion by the “comrades who don’t understand” might represent the infamous grain in the sand. The detail capable, perhaps, of jamming the glorious war machine in view of the regional elections of 2025 (to which Governor Eugenio Giani arrives with the advantage of the forecast). But what is the project that has raised this authentic hornet’s nest of controversy? It is, specifically, the inter-municipal structural plan of the Valdichiana senese.
A project that includes the use of regarding 50 hectares for productive logistics with the provision of 13 hectares of buildings on agricultural land near the Valdichiana motorway toll booth in Bettolle, in the municipality of Sinalunga. «This would be an irreversible land consumption on agricultural land that has remained intact since the historical reclamation of the Valdichiana, which is home to numerous farmhouses with distinctive architectural features, called Leopoldine, in reference to the Grand Duke Leopold of Lorraine who promoted their diffusion – the members of the No Bettolle logistics hub committee told us – The Leopoldine are protected by the Tuscany Region in the Territorial Address Plan. These lands also include all those elements that allowed the Valdichiana to be registered in 2020 by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies in the National Register of Rural Landscapes, Agricultural Practices and Traditional Knowledge».
In short, you don’t have to be an architect to understand how, in the area that has also become famous for the famous Chianina cow, such a logistics area would have an irreversible impact. Devastating. And it would change, for the worse, the lives of the residents.
Just imagine the constant coming and going of trucks and trailers. Moreover, on streets that are anything but modern. “After the protests and the formation of a citizens’ committee, the mayor, Edo Zacchei, throwing the stone and hiding his hand wrote on social media that there will be no logistics hub, but that the area will be generically productive and significantly downsized before the final approval phase of the Structural Plan. The benefit of the doubt is a must and for this reason the No Logistics Hub committee together with other local associations such as Italia Nostra, Lega Ambiente continues its work”.
Under the pretext of economic and productive development and the new jobs that might be created, the Democratic Party wants to carry out an operation that is difficult to understand.
A revolution that will bring with it an exponential growth in air pollution levels. A political choice (perhaps) useful in the immediate future, (certainly) harmful in the future. A huge area, with dimensions very similar to the entire hamlet of Bettolle. It should be remembered that, in 2021, the Region had criticized the Plan, for its impact. But the same, magically, did not derail.
“The mayor has no clear ideas regarding the development of our area. Perhaps enchanted by the panacea of the Imu, he had initially even planned a crematorium, close to the town, in the area of the municipal cemetery, very close to a nursery school – concluded the members of the No Bettolle logistics hub committee – On the one hand, they are thinking of doubling the number of holes on the golf course, to attract a select and high-level type of tourism, on the other, they are thinking of building a hub that would be three times larger than the Valdichiana Outlet. A speculation that risks accelerating and not stopping rural depopulation”.
