The Demise of Wagner Group: Impact on Russian Politics and Kremlin’s Involvement

“There is no longer a Wagner group, strictly speaking, as a serious troupe,” said Oleksiï Reznikov this Friday, 48 hours following the death of the Russian oligarch.

The paramilitary group Wagner is “broken”, estimated the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Oleksiï Reznikov, in an interview broadcast this Friday, following the presumed death of its leader Evguéni Prigojine. “There is no longer, strictly speaking, a Wagner group, as a serious troupe, as it was a year ago. They are broken”, judged Resnikov, in an interview with the German Sunday weekly, Welt am Sonntag.

According to the Ukrainian minister, the alleged disappearance of Prigozhin “has weakened” Russian President Vladimir Putin.

What is the role of the Kremlin?

“Because it showed the world that if Putin makes a deal with someone and then breaks it, then you can’t trust him anymore,” Oleksiy Reznikov added, according to excerpts of this interview published in advance.

Since Prigozhin’s alleged death in an air disaster in Russia, speculation has been rife regarding possible Kremlin involvement in the crash of the private jet from Moscow to St. Petersburg. These claims were denied by the Russian president’s spokesman, who called them an “absolute lie”.

Vladimir Putin had called Yevgeny Prigojine, whom he had known since the 1990s, a traitor because of his armed rebellion on June 23 and 24. Prigojine had given up his mutiny following an agreement with the Kremlin which provided for his exile with his men in Belarus and the abandonment of the charges.
