“The Delusional Project of a 100 Million Strong Canada in 2100: Debunking the Myths”

I often talk about cinema with Richard Martineau.

We both agree on the fact that certain films are so bad, so completely failed, that they become fun to watch and arouse a kind of fascination.

You look at this disaster and you think, “How is this possible? or “no, no, they won’t dare…”.

And yet, yes, it is possible, yes, they dare.

Foolery

This was a bit my reaction to some nonsense read in the wake of this delusional project to endow Canada with a population of 100 million in 2100.

“You shouldn’t be afraid, it’s irrational. »

There are irrational fears, like that of flying. But there is nothing irrational to fear, in this crazy scenario, for the future of an already fragile language and culture.

“No choice, because Quebec is aging. »

The median age of the newcomer is too close to the median age of the Quebec population for immigration to rejuvenate our demographics, especially not when the immigrant then brings in his elderly parents through the federal family reunification program.

“The real solution is to have more babies. »

The birth rate has fallen in all Western countries since the advent of the contraceptive pill and the massive arrival of women on the labor market.

Even if the fertility rate in Quebec fell from the current 1.6 to 1.9 or 2, aging would continue.

Pro-natalist policies would cost billions. I see from here those whose children are grown or who do not want to complain about the tax increases required to finance personal choices.

“We absolutely have to increase the population. »

For what ? Most rich countries have small populations, and the dramatic increases in immigration in recent years have not solved any problems, especially labor shortages.

“The French character of Quebec would not be threatened. »

This assertion is not accompanied by any rational argument. It’s so stupid that it would stoop too low to answer it.

“We must preserve the weight of Quebec within Canada. »

First, Quebec’s formerly superior weight did not prevent the patriation of the Constitution in 1982 or Ottawa from doing what it wanted whenever it wanted.

Then, if Quebec welcomed lots of people who don’t care about French or who practice a fervent religious faith, you will then try to pass laws on language or secularism. Good luck.

And of course not a word about the problems of housing, access to health care, education, ghettoization that this delirious increase would cause.

Negation

I even read that the Meech Lake (1987) and Charlottetown (1992) agreements once guaranteed a proportion of Quebec seats in the federal Parliament.

Yeah, bad? Last time I checked, those two deals never saw the light of day.

In short, anything to deny reality and avoid drawing political conclusions.
