The Li Guoding Science and Technology Development Foundation held the 1st Li Guoding Award Ceremony in Taipei on November 9, and awarded the first Li Guoding Award to TSMC founder Zhang Zhongmou. In addition to introducing the highly regarded “Godfather of Technology” Li Guoding on Facebook, the central bank also revealed that the development of the semiconductor industry originated from a breakfast meeting at Xiaoxinxin Soy Milk Store, No. 40, Nanyang Street, Taipei City on February 7, 1974, when a development plan was reached. The consensus on bulk circuit technology lays the foundation for the semiconductor industry.
TSMC founder Zhang Zhongmou recently received the 1st Li Guoding Award. President Tsai Ing-wen, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang and others attended the award ceremony in person. Huang Renxun mentioned in his speech: “Zhang Zhongmou said that without Li Guoding, there would be no TSMC, but I want to say, without Zhang Zhongmou, there would be no Huida!”
The central bank also introduced the deeds of former Li Guoding on Facebook. Li Guoding was hailed as “an important promoter of Taiwan’s economic miracle” and the “godfather of science and technology.” During his tenure as Minister of Economic Affairs, he promoted many important economic constructions; while as Minister of Finance, he contributed more to Taiwan’s economic development. He made significant contributions to tax reform; following 1976, Li Guoding served as political commissar of the Executive Yuan and convener of the Science and Technology Research and Development Group, actively promoting Taiwan’s science and technology development and construction. In 1994, he was awarded the First Class Medal of Stars by former President Lee Teng-hui.
Zhang Zhongmou has said many times in the past: “Without Li Guoding, there would be no TSMC.” In 1984, the Industrial Research Institute planned to develop a very large integrated circuit plan. Under the leadership of Executive Yuan President Sun Yunxuan, Executive Yuan political commissar Li Guoding and Industrial Research Institute Chairman Xu Xianxiu At the invitation of others, Zhang Zhongmou, the former senior vice president of Texas Instruments and the former president of General Instrument, returned to Taiwan in 1985 to serve as the president of the Industrial Research Institute.
Taiwan’s first 6-inch integrated circuit experimental factory was completed in 1986. The following year, with the support of the Executive Yuan and the Industrial Research Institute, TSMC was established. Zhang Zhongmou became the chairman of TSMC, pioneering the professional wafer foundry model. TSMC quickly developed into a globally important wafer foundry and significantly changed the industrial ecology, gradually moving towards a vertical division of labor model. Since the 1990s, Taiwan’s semiconductor industry chain has gradually become more complete, with representative companies in various fields working together to create impressive output values.
