For a very large majority of French-speaking teachers, the level of students is in free fall. More than a third of students do not reach a level considered satisfactory. This is what a survey carried out by Aped among 1,150 teachers demonstrates. The reason: weak foundations, classes that are too large and students who are poorly stimulated by their parents. The students no longer want to work”, “they no longer have spelling”, “we are no longer demanding enough”. These assertions heard all over the place refer to the dominant idea according to which the level of Belgian education continues to decline. They are quickly brushed aside by sociologists and educators, considering that the oldest have always criticized the generations that followed them, or even that this question lacks legitimacy. What level are we talking regarding? In which disciplines? In which schools? Which students? “The question of level is obviously legitimate, because a school which offers the same opportunities to all students implies both fairness and ambition,” insists Nico Hirtt, former professor of physics and mathematics, now in charge studies at Aped (the Call for a Democratic School).
