The Declining Birth Rates: A Global Concern for Developed Countries

According to data from China’s National Health Commission, 9.56 million children were born in China in 2022, the lowest number since 1949, when statistics were kept. Compared to the value in 2021, this is a 10% drop, which is really shocking considering that the Chinese communist leadership is doing everything to increase the desire to have children. And it was the first time in six decades that the number of the Chinese population decreased, there are “only” 1.41 billion Chinese. So it might easily be that the concern of the Chinese leadership that the country will “get old before it is rich” is justified. Globally, the number of children in developed countries is decreasing It is also a fact that, among all other factors, the most important reason for the decrease in the number of children in China is the one-child policy, which was in force in the country between 1980 and 2015. 40% of Chinese babies born last year were the second child in a family, while 15% were children of families with three or more children. This is a critical factor for Beijing, and President Xi Jinping has repeatedly voiced this. But the costs of childcare and education, rising unemployment, expensive health care and the economic slowdown all contribute to the decline in the number of children. But this is not only a Chinese problem. In Japan, the number of births has decreased for the seventh year in a row compared to the previous year, so far this year, not even 800,000 Japanese babies have been born. For as long as numbers have been tracked in Japan, the number of children in the island nation has not been this low since 1899. The average number of births per woman was only 1.26 last year, which broke the record set in 2005. In order for the population of a society not to decrease, a rate of at least 2.07 is required. In the case of Japan, the main role in the decline in the desire to have children is played by economic difficulties. Besides, the cultural trend is that young people don’t really want to get married and have children. But there is also a decrease in the United States from 2021 to 2022, but they are still much better off than, say, the Japanese or the Russians. And although experts expected that the COVID epidemic would increase the desire to have children, the exact opposite happened in more developed countries. In Hungary, all of the independent analyzes point out that the Hungarian birth rate fell dramatically at the end of 2020 and at the beginning of 2021 (8.5%). However, an overall increase was achieved in Hungary, compared to the figure of 1.23 in 2011, the Hungarian birth rate managed to increase. But at the moment it is not yet clear what will be the best measure to stop the decrease in the number of children in more developed countries. The French are in the best position in Europe, so it would be worthwhile for the Hungarian leadership to look in that direction as well.
