The results of the survey among local residents are shocking. Almost half of the French people simply do not need the Olympics!
The world’s premier sporting event may not be a very pleasant sight. The Olympic Games in Paris have a lot of problems, and ordinary citizens of France, of course, feel it. If earlier the 2024 Games were supported by 76% of the country’s inhabitants, now there are a little more than half of such people. And in general, the results of the polls indicate a sharp decline in interest in the Olympics. It looks like the International Olympic Committee and Thomas Bach have taken a wrong turn somewhere.
Why are the French unhappy?
The research company Odoxa decided to find out how the people of France feel about the Summer Olympics in Paris next year. According to Inside the Games, the survey was conducted among people aged 18 years and older. The results were largely shocking. Support for the Games has declined 18 percent over the past year and a half to just 58 percent. And over the past three months, the fall has been just a nightmare – 11%.
However, nothing surprising. The closer to the start of the Olympics, the more people are concerned about the issue of its holding. And even more so for local residents, because it is they who will have to deal with the flow of tourists, price increases, crowds on the streets, in restaurants and transport, and other inconveniences. Often this is compensated by the fantastic atmosphere of the holiday, the experience of their athletes and new acquaintances, but not in this case.
The French are angry about high ticket prices, the poor readiness of some Olympic venues and a number of other things. By the way, the survey was conducted literally at the same time when it became known about police raids and searches at the headquarters of the organizers of the Olympics. Obviously, most people did not yet know about this situation, otherwise the percentage of supporters of the 2024 Games would certainly have become even less.

And here the IOC and Bach
The survey also included this question: “Do you believe that the Olympics will help create new jobs and increase the prestige of France in the world?” Here, too, the cat wept for optimists. In general, the French are no longer as interested in the Olympic competition as they were a few years ago. If the Games in Rio in 2016 were watched at least once by almost 70% of the inhabitants, then a little more than half of the French plan to watch home competitions in Paris on TV.
This is already a stone in the garden of the IOC in general and Thomas Bach in particular. It seems that a huge number of fans around the world do not like what is happening with the Olympic movement. Whatever Bach said in his last speech, the Games have become terribly politicized. Today went to Russian athletes who were illegally suspended from participation in international competitions. Tomorrow it could affect any other country.
Bach correctly said at this week’s IOC session that “world sport is under threat.” The opinion of the French regarding the Olympics is a vivid confirmation of this. If things continue like this, the 2024 Games risk becoming a farce.
