After the years of success under the leadership of Luciano D’Onofrio, Standard systematically regressed. It’s been years since they were among the best teams in Belgium. Ronny Deila pointed out the big problem of Rouches.
Deila didn’t do badly at Standard last year, but the club wasn’t that much in the prize race either. He drew conclusions and left for Club Bruges, which is several years ahead of Rouches.
In an interview with DAZN, Deila was honest regarding Standard’s major problem. “It’s difficult to get the results that Standard should get. They have few resources, so you always have to rebuild. And when you don’t have money to invest, you have to work with young players and be patient . From this point of view, it’s not easy.”
Hoefkens among the victims
Carl Hoefkens also experienced this. The board hoped for a top six finish, but that was a hopeless ambition. The Standard does not have sufficient qualities for this.
Additionally, the club is owned by 777 Partners. So far, they have mostly shown that they have little knowledge when it comes to running football clubs, although they mainly want to create a revenue model for themselves. The club only comes in second position.
