The decision to withdraw from the education agreement will be decided by the Labor Party Council on Sunday

“The meeting of the party council will be held on Sunday, and the issue of withdrawing from the education agreement is already included in its agenda because the provisions stipulated there are not implemented. There is no point in participating in it. We will propose to the council to make a decision and formalize that unenforceable agreement and withdraw from it,” Labor Party chairman Andrius Mazuronis told BNS on Tuesday.

Such a step by the “workers” was caused by the rejection of proposals to increase education funding as much as the Lithuanian Education Workers’ Union (LŠDPS) demanded during the adoption of the 2024 state budget in the Seimas on Tuesday.

The trade union led by Andrias Navickos asked for a larger increase in teachers’ salaries in the budget – 15% each. from January and from September. At that time, the Government intends to increase the salary of teachers twice by approximately 10 percent next year.

The trade union claims that inflation is compensated in this way, and 130 percent. the average wage (VDU) indicator will not be reached.

In next year’s budget, more than 350 million is additionally allocated to increase the salaries of pedagogues, teachers, researchers and non-academic workers. euros.

The national education agreement stipulates that by the end of 2024, the salaries of teachers and lecturers must rise by up to 130 percent, respectively. and 150 percent average salary.

Representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers claim that when raising salaries for the second time since September, changes in the VMU will be taken into account and additional money will be sought in the budget if necessary.

On September 1, 2021, the leaders of the parliamentary parties signed the National Agreement on Education, which, among other things, committed to increasing the share of the gross domestic product allocated to education, increasing teachers’ salaries, and cementing other commitments.

In mid-September of this year, the opposition Union of Lithuanian Peasants and Greens withdrew from it. According to her, the obligations of the agreement are not fulfilled, the education situation in the country is rapidly deteriorating, and the party cannot remain among those parties that “implement” the agreement in this way.
