The Debate panel was split on which Pot 1 side they would most like to face in the Champions League group stage draw in August.
Wes Brown believes that in terms of opponents, the bigger the better, while his colleague Danny Webber wants revenge on Sevilla FC, who knocked us out of the Europa League last year .
Journalists Ian Irving and Laurie Whitwell would be delighted to reunite with Barcelona, following our victory over the Spanish champions in 2022/23, due to the exceptional atmosphere created during the two play-off matches.
United clinched their return to Europe’s most prestigious competition by finishing third in the Premier League and impatience is already mounting as the group stages approach.
“I like big matches”
said Brown, who won the competition with the Reds in 1999 and 2008. “You just have to see FC Barcelona, or PSG this time around.”
“You know, anything like that. I mean whatever, you know, they’re gonna get up for a game, if I’m being honest. It’s a big opportunity for everyone, for the whole club, and I think on D-Day we can compete with these teams and beat them. That’s why big games are always a bit more interesting for me.”
“We want to play the best teams and I feel like when we play the best, something special happens that night.”
Webber is determined for Erik ten Hag’s side to set the record straight once morest Sevilla as one of our trap sides won the Europa League, qualifying them for the League champions, despite a relatively disappointing season in La Liga.
“Of course the big names, Barcelona and PSG, are still there”
, said the former Academy product. “But one of them seems particularly interesting to me: Sevilla FC. It’s like revenge, following what happened last season. It is as if not, it was necessary to rectify the shooting. You see what I mean ? We must therefore correct the situation. It’s something that lasts. To me, it’s like you look at this and say to yourself, let’s put this aside.”
“For me, it’s Seville. Even if it’s not United versus Barcelona, it would allow that story to be forgotten and the players to realize that it’s settled.
Transfer stories: Ruud van Nistelrooy
Whitwell, de The Athletic, a commenté :
“Old Trafford once morest Barcelona was great, wasn’t it? I think that’s kinda what you’re referring to. [Wes], those kind of crucial moments where you say, yeah, come on, let’s see what you have in mind. And they rose to the occasion in this match.”
“I think those are the kinds of opportunities that we’re looking for.”
Irving, a reporter for Premier League Productions, fondly recalls the 2-1 win over Xavi’s men as it went a fabulous 4-3 on aggregate.
“It’s the best moment of last season for me,” he insists. “Forget the Cup final [Carabao], which was awesome, and I know a lot of fans would have had a great day at Wembley, or watching it at home. But the atmosphere at Old Trafford that night, I remember walking off the field and walking around the press box for work, and seeing the looks of people and the jubilation that reigned over their face. The feeling of having beaten Barcelona, you know, and that’s it.
“It may not be regarding winning the trophies yet, but it’s those kinds of nights and results that matter.”
“So go with Barcelona, with Bayern Munich, with PSG, with whoever you want.”
