The RTS decision to suspend the broadcast of films with Gérard Depardieu is not unanimous in the press and on social networks. The actor whose behavior with women was highlighted in a France 2 investigation is the subject of a complaint for rape in France.
Should we deprogram films starring French actor Gérard Depardieu? The debate has been growing since the release of the program Complément d’investigation on France and the RTS decision to suspend the broadcast of films in which he stars.
A heated debate which puts the press, social networks and the world of culture in turmoil, further fueled by the next vote on the amount of the royalty.
“In doing so, the RTS is shooting itself in the foot. Its role is not to teach lessons and impose the program of its ‘knowers'”, underlines for example in The weather Valais PLR national advisor Philippe Nantermod. In this same newspaper, his colleague in Bern, the Geneva Green Nicolas Walder, welcomes the decision of the public service: “I salute the courage and commitment of the RTS which seeks to protect the sensitivity of part of the public .”

Same decision in Belgium, France and Canada
On the RTS side, we defend ourselves by explaining that we made the same decision as the Belgian, French and Canadian channels.
“RTS TV programming constantly checks whether the schedules are adapted to the context and the audience’s appetite so that they do not skip. In fact, we have canceled only one film where Depardieu plays a leading role, and no more no less. We have maintained the broadcast of another film in which he plays a minor role. Which has also earned us reactions from the public”, defends Marco Ferrara, spokesperson for RTS, on the 7:30 p.m. microphone.
A bad idea, according to Jacob Berger
Director Jacob Berger is directly affected by this decision, because his film “Aime ton père” (2002) tells the story of a famous but detestable writer, played in this case by Gérard Depardieu.
“I think that banning in general is a bad idea. I think that we might have instead chosen to program films which talk regarding these questions, which deal with this problem of the great abusive man, including films with Gérard Depardieu” , he notes.
For producer Pauline Gygax, on the contrary, the decision is common sense. “By suspending these films, we are telling all victims of sexist and sexual violence that they are respected and listened to. And when we consider in Switzerland that this is almost one in two women, it is important. “
This is not the first time that films have been canceled. This had already been the case for Pierre Palmade, but without it giving rise to debate.
