The death toll in Turi prison rises to 20 after the riots

Until the last report from the authorities, at 7:40 p.m. on Sunday, it rose to 20 the number of deceased inmates that have left the riots in the prison of Turi, located in Cuenca. This is a new tragic episode of clashes in that prison, similar to those that already occurred last year.

This situation, which also left ten wounded; of them five seriously, it is the first large of this 2022 in the country’s prisons. President Guillermo Lasso, precisely, highlighted a few days ago that since the beginning of the year eight inmates had died in prison, compared to 83 in the same period the previous year.

Among the 20 fatalities reported by the Government there were at least five mutilated bodies, according to Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo, who acknowledged that in the confrontation the prisoners used “war material” how regardingusiles, in addition to other firearms and sharp elements that were in his power.

According to the official, the clashes -which began yesterday morning- took place because “There is an organization that wants to have absolute power within the center and there are some cells that have rebelled once morest them.”

According to the prison service report, no escapees were recorded, while 90 prisoners were evacuated, including the ten wounded, who were treated by the Ministry of Health.

The violence of the clashes might be seen during the night from outside the prison, where there were detonations and shots captured by recordings broadcast on social networks.
