The toll of the violent fire which broke out this Monday, December 18, 2023, in downtown Conakry, following the explosion of the main fuel depot in Guinea, has increased. Initially increased to 11 cases of death and 88 cases of serious injuries, according to the operational technical director of civil protection, Jean Traoré, the toll rose to 18 deaths.
The announcement was made this Tuesday by the government. The authorities announced for Wednesday the “minimum” reopening of administrations in downtown Conakry and the resumption of diesel supplies throughout the territory.

During the night from Sunday to Monday, the blast from the explosion and the fire which followed in the port area of Kaloum, the administrative and business district of Conakry, caused significant material damage and shut down the economy.
« Despite the efforts made by the medical profession, today we deplore four new deaths, bringing the number of deaths to 18 » , indicated the government in a press release.

« Of 212 people admitted to health facilities, 127 returned to their families. 85 people are still hospitalized, including four in intensive care ” , he added.
