Actor Osama al-Romani died Monday in Damascus, at the age of 81, following a myocardial infarction, following a career in the beginning of which he contributed to the establishment of the National Theater in Syria, and later became famous for his theatrical and television works.

The Artists Syndicate mourned the “great artist”, and the official news agency “SANA” described him as “the owner of the creative path and one of the most important pioneers of the contemporary Syrian theater.”

Al-Romani, who was born in Damascus in 1942, was known for his theatrical roles with a companion trained by the artist Duraid Lahham, especially for his participation in the plays “Tishreen Village” and “Ghorba”, which were shown in the early sixties of the last century, and which were engraved in the memory of Syrians for a long time.

His name was associated with the famous children’s program “Iftah Ya Simsim”, which he helped establish in Kuwait in 1979, and it became part of the childhood memory of successive Arab generations.

The character of former Syrian President Adeeb Shishakli, which he presented in the series “Hammam al-Qishani,” is considered one of the most prominent dramatic stations for Roman.

Al-Romani was absent from the TV screen and stage for regarding twenty years, before returning to Damascus in 2021 and participating in several drama series, most notably the series “Kasr Bone.”

Dozens of his colleagues and hundreds of followers mourned him on social media. The actress, Shukran Murtaja, wrote in his obituary, “The Excellency of the name and the archive (..) will remain in the memory, and I was happy to return to Damascus following the long years of exile.”

Osama is the younger brother of the late artist Hani Al Romani. The details of Al-Romani’s funeral and the funeral ceremony have not yet been determined.
