The death of the Lebanese playwright Sami Khayyat

The Lebanese theatrical comedian, Sami Khayyat, died today, Wednesday, following an artistic career that made him one of the pioneers of satirical theater in the country.

The late inaugurated his artistic career with the play “Moliere Hugo and Sophocles” that he presented in 1960, then built a path of plays that were classified within the satirical lyrical theater.

Among his most prominent works throughout a career that spanned more than 60 years: “Yes for Elias”, “Abu Klebis”, “Star Ibidimi”, “Mine Darian”, “Kuma Sava”, “Qarf” and “Baabda Boom”.

Khayyat was awarded the French Order of Arts and Letters, with the rank of officer, in 2020, in appreciation of his theatrical works in French and Franco-Lebanese.

The deceased also received several honors, most notably from the Gebran Tueni Foundation and the Fakhruddin II Foundation.
