Air quality is therefore a concern… and rightly so: it can cause illness. “Lung cancer or other serious illnesses“, notes Charles Pilette, head of the pulmonology department at Saint-Luc clinics.
As we can see, this scourge causes many health problems. So is this pollution the cause of premature deaths in our country? Yes, according to the Inter-regional Environment Unit.
“In Belgium, we are on the order of 5 to 6,000 premature deaths per year“, explains Philippe Matz, scientific collaborator. But the trend is improving: “A few years ago, we were still on figures like 9 to 10,000 deaths per year, so we are clearly improving“.
