When Malia submitted her film to the Sundance Film Festival, she used the name “Malia Ann” as the director’s name instead of her real name.

In a video interview released by the festival, she said: “The Heart” is regarding lost things, lonely people, forgiveness and regret. I hope this movie will make viewers less lonely, or at least remind them not to forget that someone is always by their side.”

“The Heart” is Malia Obama’s debut work developed with consultant Donald Glover’s Gilga production company. Along with Glover, she also collaborated on the 2023 Prime Video miniseries “Swarm”, which starred many famous stars such as: Dominique Fishback, Chloe Bailey, Damson Idris, Billie Eilish, Rory Culkin and Paris Jackson.

Ahead of the film’s release, Donald Glover shared: “The first thing we made clear to Malia was that she would only get a one-time chance to do this. You’re Barack Obama’s daughter. Because So if you make a bad movie, it will haunt you for the rest of your life.” He also appreciated Malia Obama’s dedication and professionalism during her work.

According to an interview with Vanity Fair in 2022, Donald Glover also shared regarding Malia: “I feel like a lot of good things are going to happen to her. Her writing style is amazing.” Meanwhile, creator Janine Nabers, who collaborated with Malia on the “Swarm” series, appreciated her originality and humor in composing the script.
