The Dangers of Tampered Electric Scooters: Speeding Risks and Road Safety Hazards

Electric scooters are manufactured not to exceed 25-30 kilometers per hour. However, some people tamper with them so that they reach unimaginable speeds for such small machines. In Vilvoorde, for example, a driver was checked at 99 km/h. This represents a danger for the user as well as for other road users.

Unlocking an electric scooter is obviously prohibited. But beyond that, it is very dangerous, recalls Belinda Demattia, spokesperson for the Walloon road safety agency (AWSR): “When you unblock a vehicle, you end up with a machine that can go very fast even though it was not designed for that. The brakes are not suitable, for example. There is also a risk of losing control and in the event of an accident, the consequences are much more serious.

She specifies: “On a scooter, you don’t have a body, a shock at 99 km/h is unforgiving. The risk of being seriously injured or even dying is very high..”

And then, it’s a danger for other users: “Pedestrians, cyclists, and even motorists do not expect to see a scooter traveling at this speed. At 90 kilometers per hour, you can also injure a pedestrian, you really take the risk of seriously injuring, or even fatally, other road users.“Not to mention that in the event of an accident, the driver’s insurance might turn once morest him since he used a tampered vehicle.
