The Dangers of Improper Toilet Paper and Wiping: Expert Recommendations for Healthier Hygiene Practices

The wrong type of toilet paper and improper wiping might lead to irritation, hemorrhoids, and even life-threatening infections. So to avoid any health problems, experts, whose comments were relayed by the Daily mail, shared their recommendations. First of all, as they explained, single-ply toilet paper should be avoided. It is rougher on the skin and therefore can cause open sores, increasing the risk of infection.

Concretely, this toilet paper, cheaper than the others, has a very thin thickness. Therefore, you are more likely to use more to get the job done. And repeated rubbing with this rough paper can therefore lead to uncomfortable itching called pruritus ani. Bleached toilet paper is also not recommended because it can cause discomfort such as irritation of the vulva, the external part of the female genitalia. Experts therefore recommend using thick, absorbent and soft toilet paper.

“Cleaning should be gentle”

But that’s not all. How you wipe can also impact your genital health. Dr. Pasricha suggests dabbing rather than wiping because wiping can be harsh on the skin and delicate tissues just beneath the surface. This can lead to hemorrhoids, swelling of the veins in the rectum, and sometimes bleeding. “Although the anal area should be cleaned following each bowel movement, this cleaning should be gentle. Harsh rubbing and scrubbing can irritate the skin and trigger anal itching.”, said doctors at Harvard Medical School while clarifying that wiping back and forth was also essential, especially for women. This is because fecal bacteria might enter the urethra, the tube through which urine exits, causing a urinary tract infection. Finally, they advise closing the toilet seat before flushing. According to an old study, not doing so would spread 12 times more bacteria “VS. difficult”a germ that causes diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease.

Note that for some experts, it is better not to use toilet paper at all, considered unhygienic. Replacing paper with a bidet (in which the genitals and anus are washed with water rather than wiped) might significantly reduce the risk of infections, according to Japanese scientists. A study, carried out in 2022 and published in the Journal of Water & Health, confirmed their statements. It found that those who used a bidet had 10 times less harmful bacteria on their hands than toilet paper users.
