Shaaban said that the compound he is referring to is “uric acid,” stressing that its high blood level is the main cause of gout, which is an inflammation that affects the joint of the big toe in the foot.

The former dean of the Heart Institute explained that high uric acid in the blood not only leads to gout, but also increases the risk of atherosclerosis.
