“The Dangers of Blue Light: Harmful Effects on Retina and Biological Rhythm, Especially for Children”

Blue light, generated by LEDs and emitted, among other things, by screens, poses various problems for the human body. Research has, in fact, highlighted dangers for the retina and the biological rhythm. Children are particularly affected by this phenomenon.

LED: harmful consequences for the retina

For the past ten years, LED experts have regularly contradicted each other regarding their dangerousness. However, the more research advances, the more we realize the danger of LEDs for the body, and especially for the eyes.

Thus, scientists from theInserm realized by carrying out an experiment on rats that: […] by exposing these same animals for 24 hours to a light intensity similar to that usually used in homes (500 lux), only the LEDs appeared harmful”. The latter are accused of causing an alteration of the retina. This deterioration might ultimately: “promote age-related macular degeneration. »

But why are these bulbs, economical and more ecological, harmful to health? The answer is related to the type of light they emit. Indeed, they produce blue light and it is this that causes problems for the eyes.

Inserm indicates regarding the danger of blue light: ” […]the light emitted by LEDs generates two parallel toxic phenomena: apoptosis, but also a second form of cell death, necrosis. However, by becoming necrotic, a cell damages its neighbours. This explains why the toxicity of blue light is higher than that of other wavelengths. »

Blue light: a greater danger for children

ANSES has begun expert appraisal work on the issue of LEDs and blue light, in 2010. She was able to reiterate her conclusions, 2017 and in 2019, on this point. The Agency explains that it is necessary to: […] limit the use of LED devices rich in blue light, especially for children […] “. Indeed, the youngest, children and adolescents, have a lens of the eye that filters blue light less well than that of adults. It is therefore necessary to protect them from this type of light, which is found in particular on screens (computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.).

You should also know that blue light disturbs the biological rhythm. The use of screens before going to bed disturbs the sleep of adults, and of course, of the youngest. ANSES therefore recommends limiting: “ […] exposure of populations and in particular of children to light rich in blue before bedtime and during the night. »
