sparkling wine
In recent years, there are more and more pre-mixed sweetened and alcoholic drinks on the market, called “alcopop”. Their alcohol concentration is similar to that of beer (regarding 4 to 8%), and their fruity sweetness may mask the taste of alcohol, making it easy for people to drink too much, which is harmful to health. Alcoholic drinks not only cause people to consume more calories, but alcohol also inhibits the decomposition of fats for use as energy by the body, making it easier for fat to accumulate in the central abdomen. At the same time, alcohol can affect the body’s hormones and neurotransmission, leading to an increase in appetite. If you eat snacks with wine, it will further increase your caloric intake. Therefore, drinking any type of alcohol increases the risk of obesity and cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, stroke and coronary heart disease.
However, there is currently no evidence that drinking alcohol is safe, so people who do not have drinking habits are advised not to drink. For people who drink alcohol, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2020-2025) recommend that each adult male should drink no more than 2 drinks per time, while women should drink no more than 1 drink:
Each of the following items is equivalent to one drink, or one unit of alcohol:
• Three-quarters cans (approximately 250 ml) of beer or “sparkling wine” with an alcohol content of 5%;
• A small glass (approximately 100 ml) of wine with an alcohol content of 12%;
• A bar glass (approximately 30 ml) of 40% alcohol by volume spirits.
In order to reduce alcohol-related harm and the risk of obesity, everyone should exercise moderation when drinking and try to reduce or avoid drinking. At the same time, they should exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet, consume enough fruits and vegetables, and establish a healthy eating pattern.
