The challenge of purchasing power: a daily life on the razor’s edge

A shocking truth: from the 10th of each month, 31% of French people find themselves with less than 100 euros in their bank account following their essential expenses. figure revealed by Ifop in its latest study on household purchasing power. A situation that strikes with even more force those who suffer from psychological distress. This difficulty in making ends meet does not only affect a minority. On the contrary, more than half of French people (56%) admit that they struggle to live on their household income.

Inflation gradually eats away at purchasing power and impacts their daily lives. Rising, the French observe it: 82% of those questioned note an increase in the prices of food products. But also on gasoline (77%) and energy (75%). Thus, more than half of French people (58%) have reduced their food expenditure out of financial necessity, a figure up sharply since 2007.

A critical look at the government’s approach

The consequences of this inflation do not stop at our plates. Half of those surveyed admit to forgoing medical care for lack of funds. Worse still, more and more people are pushing back health spending. Again, this figure is up sharply compared to the situation in 2007.

Faced with this difficult reality, the French express notable disappointment with the political response. An overwhelming majority (73%) believe that the government is not doing enough to counter this galloping inflation. On the other hand, only 24% think that the State acts correctly in this area. Nevertheless, this is an increase in the figure compared to the previous year.
