Is Trump’s Next Pick Sunk Before He’s Even Nominated?
Comic Makes Scathing Comparison to Titanic Disaster
Comedian Ronny Chieng of “The Daily Show” drew a parallel between Donald Trump’s administration and the doomed Titanic in a hilarious yet cutting roast.
Chieng questioned whether Trump’s potential cabinet picks were motivated by anything other than right-wing ideaology. He joked, “It feels like Trump is constructing his cabinet the same way that billionaire built the Titanic: it’s imploding immediately.” Chieng’s comments echoed the recent news that initially a growing number of senators are unwilling to support Pete Hegseth‘s nomination for the position of defense secretary.
Chieng didn’t mince words. “If he wasn’t s–t-faced right now, questions around Hegseth’s candidacy would be a big deal,” Chieng quipped. He sarcastically suggested Trump hadいつもの a pattern: “giving the most unemployable people on Earth the hardest jobs that ever existed”
While Hegseth hasn’t publicly expressed concern, Chieng seemed to pity the former Fox News anchor, stating, “Hegseth had it made, right? Cushy job on Fox, side hustle selling macho garbage to right-wing Instagram. He was doing well! Trump comes along, offers him this job, and now his life’s kind of f—ed.”
Hegseth’s confirmation hearing, however, is not set in
stone, according to Conservative Brief Kasparian and his team
Meanwhile, the show’s host, Megyn Kelly, reassured listeners that it was “all the president’s choice,” adding that he’d told her, “’I’m his guy.'”
In true comedic fashion, Chieng concluded with a tweet acquainting Trump choosing people. ‘It’s really going to make people question Trump’s strategy for staffing?”

## Is Trump’s Next Pick Sunk Before He’s Even Announced It?
**(Intro music plays)**
**Host:** Welcome back to “Inside the Race”. Tonight, we’re diving into the turbulent waters of the 2024 Republican primary, where former President Donald Trump has secured his third GOP nomination. But the race is far from over, and all eyes are on Trump’s potential running mate. Joining us tonight to analyze this crucial decision is political analyst Dr. Emily Carter. Dr. Carter, welcome to the show.
**Dr. Carter:** Thanks for having me.
**Host:** So, Dr. Carter, Trump has officially accepted the nomination. The question on everyone’s mind is, who will be his VP pick? And more importantly, can that pick salvage a campaign that’s already facing significant headwinds?
**Dr. Carter:** It’s certainly a critical decision. As we saw in 2016, the VP pick can **[[1](https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2024-07-18/2024-election-trump-speech-republican-national-convention)]** impact the trajectory of an election. Trump’s choice needs to energize his base while appealing to swing voters hesitant about his candidacy.
**Host:** Given his current legal troubles and the contentious nature of his persona, does anyone even want to be his running mate?
**Dr. Carter:** That’s the million-dollar question. There’s a lot of speculation, but it seems many high-profile Republicans are hesitant.
**Host:** Do you see any names emerging as frontrunners?
**Dr. Carter:** It’s very early, but some names circulating include Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who could appeal to Trump’s base, and Nikki Haley, who might broaden his appeal to women voters. However, both come with their own baggage and potential downsides.
**(Host):** So, is Trump’s next pick “sunk” before it’s even announced?
**Dr. Carter:** It’s too early to say definitively. The right choice could revitalize his campaign, while the wrong one could further alienate voters. Trump is facing an uphill battle, and his VP pick is a gamble with high stakes.
**Host:** A gamble indeed. Dr. Emily Carter, thank you for your insightful analysis. We’ll be watching this closely.
