[Newtalk新聞] Czech president-elect Petr Pavel had a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today and plans to speak with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen tomorrow, his team said. Pavel stressed that he will support the relationship between the Czech Republic and Taiwan, with which it is “absolutely in our interest” to maintain active commercial and technical relations.

According to Agence France-Presse, Pavel, who is a staunch supporter of Ukraine, had a phone call with Zelensky today. Zelensky tweeted: “I personally congratulate Pavel on winning the Czech presidential election.” He also mentioned: “Thanks to him and the Czech people for their unwavering support. He has been invited to visit Ukraine.” In addition, Pavel’s spokesman Marketa Rehakova told AFP that Pavel’s phone call with Tsai Ing-wen is scheduled to take place on the 30th.

Prague officially pursues a one-China policy, as does the European Union (EU), but Czech officials still have a close relationship with Taiwan. In an interview with Czech Radio in the past, Pavel stated that he would support the relationship between the Czech Republic and Taiwan, and that the one-China policy should be complemented by the “two systems” principle. “If we have a specific relationship with Taiwan, it’s a different system, there’s nothing wrong with that,” he said, adding: “It’s absolutely in our interest to have an active commercial and technical relationship with Taiwan.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Czech Republic held the second round of presidential elections from January 27 to 28. Pavel won with 58.32% of the votes. He will officially take office in early March and become the fourth president of the Czech Republic since independence in 1993. In response to whether Tsai Ing-wen spoke with Pavel, Presidential Office Spokesperson Zhang Dunhan responded earlier that Taiwan and the Czech Republic will strengthen cooperation in various fields between the two sides. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will properly evaluate and plan ways to promote interaction between the two sides. It will also be explained with the social report.
