The Cybertruck Production Delay: Updates on Tesla’s Electric Pickup and Delivery Schedule

2023-07-18 14:50:00

It was with a simple photo of factory employees with the first copy of the eccentric electric pickup that Tesla made the news official. The Cybertruck enters the production phase in the manufacturer’s Texas Gigafactory. Presented for the first time in 2019 – remember the famous “failure” of armored windows – the Cybertruck will therefore arrive on the roads almost two years late. Initially, in fact, the availability of the model was announced for “end of 2021”. The time in particular for the brand to refine the development of new generation batteries using 4680 cells, more complicated than expected. These, denser in energy, should allow the pick-up to keep its promises in terms of autonomy. This, in addition to the definitive data of the model, have not yet been confirmed by the manufacturer.

Four years of waiting?

However, if production begins, we cannot yet speak of mass production, which is only expected for 2024. This year, the copies will be assembled in dribs and drabs, in particular to ensure the reliability of the process of manufacture of the body in cold-rolled stainless steel. However, the first copies might be delivered in the coming weeks.

However, patient buyers who have pre-ordered their model may have to wait many more months before taking possession of their toy. Tesla had at the time announced that it had collected 1.6 million reservations for the Cybertruck. With the factory having an annual capacity of 375,000 units, this means that if all of them materialize into firm orders, it will take almost four and a half years to fill them. No doubt that in the meantime, some will have gone elsewhere, on the side of the Ford F-150 Lightning, the RAM 1500 EV or even the GMC Hummer.
