A defeat against England could be worthwhile for Scotland’s women’s national team.
This is because only one team from Great Britain is allowed to compete at the 2024 Olympics.
England needs a (possibly big) win against the Scots for their Olympic ticket.
The whole of football Scotland has been looking forward to the men’s national team’s European Championship duels with Germany, Hungary and Switzerland since the group draw last Saturday. The Scottish women’s national team is currently still involved in the Nations League. There, relegation to League B has already been sealed, but the Scots can still qualify for the Olympic football tournament.
In order to make their Olympic dream come true, the Scottish women’s stars strangely need a defeat in the last Nations League game against England. The reason for this: Only one team from Great Britain is allowed to compete at the Olympic Games. The prerequisite for this is that England qualify. This was decided before the start of the qualification.
Goal difference can decide
If the “Three Lionesses” qualify for the Olympics, a joint “Team GB” with players from England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland will travel to Paris in 2024. To do this, England has to win the group, for which a big win against Scotland is probably mandatory. The Scots, on the other hand, are already definitely at the bottom and relegated from League A with two points.
