The working group resumed its work session on Thursday, where it is also expected to decide where the nomination committee will be located.

After seven rounds of voting, the nomination committee for the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) elected its titular and alternate secretary. The first position went to Roberto Hernández, a magistrate of the Court of Appeals.

The issue was under discussion since July 30, but the lack of agreements delayed the election. It was not until August 1 that the commissioners reached agreements and appointed the secretaries with the support of 33 votes.

The function of the secretaries will be to execute the various decisions that the nominating committee may make, and they will also be the first commissioner to receive judicial notifications for actions that may be initiated by the process. The burden of responsibility also entails having direct access to the files of future candidates.

Hernández said he will do an objective job for the process of renewing the Cortes. “I can assure you that we will work in the best way, in an objective manner,” he said.

Hernández was one of the names that came up in the meeting that began last Saturday. But no consensus was reached because the academics, represented by the majority of the deans, were looking for the dean Andrés Reyes, from Da Vinci University, to fill the position.

The nominating committee finally decided to hold a vote in which Hernández would be declared the titular secretary and Reyes as the alternate, which managed to unblock the vote. Reyes declared that he would do a good job as alternate secretary, “we have values of justice and independence. We entrust ourselves to God.”
