The popular Netflix series regarding the British monarchy will end this fall. The platform has revealed some information on this long-awaited final chapter. Here’s what you need to remember.

1. A sixth season in two parts

While previous seasons had seen their ten episodes revealed at once, Netflix has announced this time that the final season will be separated into two parts. We will be able to see the first four episodes on November 16. The last six will be available on December 14.

2. A mysterious little video

To accompany this big announcement today, the platform has posted a short one-minute video online during which we see the three actresses who have personified Queen Elizabeth over the seasons: Claire Foy, Olivia Colman and Imelda Staunton. Since its creation in 2016, the series has always used a cast for two seasons, before completely changing actors followingwards. This allowed creators to make leaps in time.

3. The end of Diana

On the poster unveiled today with this announcement, we see Diana from behind, sitting alone at the end of a platform. The fifth season ended with Diana going with her two boys for a vacation to Saint-Tropez, following the invitation of Mohamed Al-Fayed. The first four episodes of the new season will cover the relationship of Diana and Dodi Al-Fayed, until their fatal car accident in 1997. The magazine People has had confirmation that the moment of impact will not be found in the series.

4. From 1997 to 2005

Netflix has mentioned that this sixth season will cover the events surrounding the British monarchy from 1997 to 2005. Elizabeth Debicki will be back as Diana. Dominic West (Charles), Jonathan Pryce (Philip), Lesley Manville (Margaret) and Imelda Staunton (Elizabeth) will also reprise their roles. Young Rufus Kampa and Fflyn Edwards will arrive as Princes William and Harry.

5. The return of turbulence

The death of Diana will obviously cause shock waves within the royal family. In the second part of the season, we will follow young William who returns to study at Eton following the death of his mother, and who must navigate this turbulence in the public eye. We will later see the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginning of William and Kate’s relationship.

6. Avoiding criticism

Critically acclaimed series during its first four seasons, The Crown saw its fifth season receive several bad reviews. The reasons? The authors were criticized for having glossed over certain historical events. It must be said that this fifth season took place in the 1980s and 1990s, and that the events reported there are therefore much fresher in the memory of many people. The choice of Dominic West to play Charles was also criticized, because according to some, the actor is much more charming than the Englishman he plays.

7. The real ending?

A few years ago, the creator of The Crown, Peter Morgan, had said that the fifth season would be the last. However, he reversed his decision halfway through, because there was too much material to discuss. We hope that he will change his mind once more because it is hard to believe that a series which followed the queen’s coronation in 1952 will not continue until her death in 2022.
