Cuba is going through a complex economic situation and an example of this argument is the lack of surgical gauze. The lack of this product is due to the fact that the materials to make it are not found in the country. The sector of the nation that has suffered the most from this bleak panorama is public health. In the city of Santa Clara, which belongs to the Villa Clara province, a textile company has been located since 1979.
This factory cannot cover all the gauze orders from the island’s medical institutions. The head of the industry, Victor Alejandro Pérez Fusté informed the local newspaper Vanguardia that the manufacture of threads and fabrics remains constant.
Imports are delayed
Surgical gauze is one of the items with the longest backlog in the unit’s production. In November 2022, the plant received a budget to process the gauze.
Although the money was guaranteed, imports of the raw material lagged behind, so the textile center has been deprived of resources. The suppliers assure that in Cuban territory there are containers with a certain amount of material, but they have not been delivered to the industry.
In previous years, Cuba produced all the gauze required by its hospitals. At present it is a problem to provide citizens with an optimal medical service, due to the deficit of surgical gauze.
Another conflict experienced by the Santa Clara factory is the aging of its workers. Several young people have trained as spinners and weavers, but most leave the vacancies following graduation.
This scenario shows that the industry on the Caribbean island is going through a worrisome crisis. It can also be seen that the largest archipelago of the Antilles depends on imports to meet its needs.
