Morán and Román are two bank employees who at a certain point in their lives question the routine life they lead. One of them finds a solution, commit a crime. He somehow manages to do it and commits his destiny to that of his partner. This decision will lead them to a resounding change in their lives in search of a better existence.

The dream has just begun. Argentine cinema will seek its third Oscar (following The Official History in 1986 and The Secret in Their Eyes in 2010) with The Criminals, the film that the Argentine Film Academy will present at the Hollywood Academy, as announced this Monday. in a streaming broadcast.

In this way it will seek – here the first step, of course – what Argentina, 1985, by Santiago Miter, achieved in the last edition of the great event of the seventh art: a nomination for best international film, which finally went to the German film No news at the front. If the film directed by Rodrigo Moreno succeeds, it will participate in the delivery scheduled for March 10, 2024.

With a premiere held at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it was very well received by critics, The Delinquents stars Daniel Elías and Esteban Bigliardi, and stages a disruptive and unconventional plot. Inspired by Hardly a Criminal -from 1949, directed by Hugo Fregonese-, it will hit national theaters on October 26.

In the story, Morán (Elías), an employee of a small bank branch in Buenos Aires, feels fed up with the entity’s corporate routine, overwhelmed and tormented by a gray existence. He then decides to go following a quiet retirement, which should surprise no one. The detail? He plans to do it in an illegitimate way, which will include – at least in his plan – time behind bars, while the loot remains in the hands of a partner who will act as an accomplice, Román (Bigliardi).

The plan appears perfect, until its execution. And Román, whose mission is to safeguard the money – a sum that is equivalent to all the salaries that both would earn until they retire – will enter a rural area, where he will come across a woman who will change much more than his own destiny. he.

The fifth film by Rodrigo Moreno, who rose to general consideration in El custodio (2006, with Julio Chávez), Los criminales is a co-production between Argentina (Wanka Cine, Jaque Productosra and Rizoma Films), Chile (Jirafa Films), Brazil ( Sancho&Punta) and Luxembourg (Les Films Fauves). In addition to its screening at Cannes, it participated in the official selection of the New York International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, in the Centrepiece section. And it earned a 95% rating from the renowned American website Rotten Tomatoes.

The aforementioned Elías and Bigliardi are completed by Margarita Molfino, Germán de Silva, Laura Paredes, Mariana Chaud, Cecilia Rainero, Javier Zoro Sutton and Gabriela Saidon.

Rodrigo Moreno, director of The Criminals

Beyond its excellence, The Criminals hides a peculiarity: intended as a block filming, it was filmed in nine weeks, but was developed over almost five years. Budget problems and the actors’ and actresses’ schedules hindered the production. And furthermore, although filming began in 2018, the restrictions imposed by the pandemic forced the cancellation of the scenes that were taking place in Córdoba in March 2020.

The cast, the director, all the technicians and the producers had to return home to comply with the mandatory quarantine. Moreno began part of the editing in the solitude of his home, modifying the script once more and once more. He even did it during editing.

“We inform you that on Thursday, September 28, the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Argentina closed the voting to choose the film that will represent the country in the best international film category of the Academy Awards. Hollywood. Once it has been inspected by the D’Alessio Notary Office, we can now announce the film that will represent us: The Criminals, directed by Rodrigo Moreno,” reads the official announcement, on the Institute’s social networks.

Now it will be the turn of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which must decide whether to include The Delinquents in the big night of the 2024 Oscars.
