Luis Alfredo Garavito, a serial rapist and murderer, died 62 days ago in a clinic in Valledupar and his body is still in the possession of Forensic Medicine. The autopsy has only been conclusive so far and the body of the criminal will only be cremated and laid to rest in a cemetery in the next few days.

The rapist’s body remained in a Forensic Medicine refrigerator in Valledupar. A microscopic analysis had to be performed on the remains of the deceased rapist to determine that “The Beast” had died of natural causes at the Nuevo Santo Tomás Clinic in Valledupar.

“Initially, the results of the National Institute of Legal Medicine indicated ‘under study’. After histopathological analysis, it was determined that Garavito died of natural causes. With this we can now carry out the process of claiming Luis Alfredo’s body,” Gabriel Alfonso Beltrán, Garavito’s lawyer, told El Tiempo.

Garavito was known as “The Beast” and his criminal record states that he admitted to the murder of 182 children and the rape of at least 200. He died following dealing with several illnesses.

Since his death, the body has had to go through several procedures that have prevented its cremation. Initially, a nephew of the criminal approached to claim the body, but there were delays in delivery while the documents provided by the relative were verified.

For these reasons, Garavito’s family filed a protection action because they considered that the rights to human dignity and mourning of family members were being violated.

Later, it was learned that the results of the necropsy had been inconclusive and that, for that same reason, the Jardines del memoria Cemetery Park in Valledupar refused to proceed with the cremation.

With the results of Forensic Medicine conclusive, Garavito’s body will be cremated in the coming days. The procedure costs 2.7 million pesos and will be assumed by the Valledupar administration. Once cremated, Garavito’s ashes will be taken to Valle del Cauca to be buried in a cemetery.
