The court file on the Mother’s Day case involving former mayor Víctor Alvarizaes is closed

The intermediate hearing in the Mother’s Day case, which implicates the former mayor of Santa Catarina Pinula, Víctor Alvarizaes, began this Monday, August 19, in the Fifth Criminal Court of First Instance; however, the provisional closure of the judicial file was announced.

According to the MP’s accusation, a Mother’s Day activity was used for a political campaign in 2015 by the municipal authorities at that time.

The event was allegedly organized with funds from the municipality of Santa Catarina Pinula, so the case implicates former mayor Alvarizaes.

In addition, it is reported that a vehicle and several motorcycles were raffled that day.

However, during the hearing on Monday, the case file on Mother’s Day was provisionally closed, due, according to the court, to flaws in the investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP), so the time to strengthen the investigation has been extended to six months.

The next hearing is scheduled for February 2025.

Another case

On June 18, Alvarizaes was sent to trial for a smear campaign case against Sebastián Siero, current mayor of Santa Catarina Pinula.

The former official will face trial for the crime of embezzlement, according to what was decided at the hearing that day.

Luisiño Sánchez, the former mayor’s spokesman, will also be tried for ideological falsehood.

Alvarizaes is accused of having orchestrated, in 2019, a smear campaign against the current mayor of that municipality, Sebastián Siero.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) accuses him of allegedly having stolen resources from the municipality of Santa Catarina Pinula to hire a company that would be in charge of discrediting the then candidate Siero.

Sánchez is also being prosecuted in this case. The prosecution accuses him of having made false statements through the municipality’s Social Communication Unit, “causing damage to the municipality of Santa Catarina Pinula in the amount of Q145,000.”

According to the prosecution’s accusation, Alvarizaes used Q145,000 of municipal funds in 2019, when he was still mayor, to hire a company to create a smear campaign during that year’s electoral contest.

The then mayor allegedly made the contract to defame Siero, then a candidate for the Unionist party, through social networks.
