On Wednesday, the course for the Ironman World Championship, scheduled for September 10 in Nice, was unveiled.
Usually the Ironman World Championship is held between Hawaii and Kona. This year, it will be relocated for the first time in its history to Nice, on September 10. The route has been unveiled and it will follow the usual route of the Ironman in Nice.
“99% will be the case”, explains Yves Cordier, the race director, to Nice morning. He only made a slight adjustment to the cycling route with his teams. « A round trip to Valderoure will remove a small appendage that went to Cipières to go up to Saint-Pons. He was quite technical. There, the round trip will be more in line with a world championship course, more rolling and prettier in terms of landscapes. »
A perfect playground
The men will start the Ironman with a 3.8 km swim. They will swim in the Baie des Anges and they will access it from the pebble beach of Les Ponchettes. Then, the athletes will complete 180.2 km of cycling through the hinterland of Nice. The villages of Vence, Gourdon and Andon, in its descending phase, will be concerned. Just like the Route de Thorenc and the Clues de Gréolières. The route has difficult climbs and technical descents with a total drop of 2,400 m.
Once the bikes have been put away, the competitors will move on to the running part by running 42.2 km. This relatively flat course consists of a loop that the athletes must complete four times on the Promenade des Anglais. The city’s famous beach clubs will be on the way, as will the Blue Chairs and the Hotel Negresco, with the Mediterranean Sea in the background.
This route promises to be a sight to behold despite the expected difficulties. « We did not choose this route for convenience, recognizes the race director, again for the regional daily. If we have been working on its identity for several years, it is because it is the ideal playground for Ironman. It will remain etched in many people’s minds.”
