ISTANBUL, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — A study revealed on Tuesday that the cost of living in Istanbul, the most populous city in Turkey, increased by 80.59 percent in August compared to the same month last year.
According to the Istanbul Planning Agency, the average monthly cost of living for a family of four in Istanbul has increased to 42,593 Turkish liras (regarding 1,590 US dollars), an increase of 3,800 liras in one month.
Turks have long suffered from a high cost of living amid soaring inflation, which hit 58.94 percent year-on-year in August, according to official data.
The government is taking a series of measures to reduce the burden of the high cost of living, represented by increasing the minimum wage and retirement pensions, as well as raising interest rates. /ts/
