For the defense of its territory and the counteroffensive, Ukraine needs all available soldiers on the battlefield. A deputy battalion commander in Odessa saw things differently: he used his soldiers to build his house.
In August 2022, the commander ordered his unit to build the home for him. This is reported by the Ukrainian investigation office and published pictures. A new, fenced-in house can be seen on it. Further photos show the arrest of the commander in civilian clothes.
While the soldiers worked as construction workers, they continued to be paid like soldiers in the Ukraine war. As a result, the state made a loss of around 2 million hryvnia (around 50,000 francs). A suspicion of abuse of office and power was filed once morest the deputy battalion commander. If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison.
Ukraine has long struggled with corruption, including during the Ukraine war. The heads of all recruiting offices were recently fired because of this. Several ministers and governors were also fired.
