The National Proposal website opened by the Yoon Seok-yeol government.

For a month starting in March, we asked the public for their opinions on the plan to collect the KBS license fee.

As a result, the President’s Office revealed that 97% of the 58,000 participants requested improvements to the way it was integrated with electricity rates.

“It’s practically the same as a tax. The right of viewers to choose a broadcast channel and whether to pay a license fee is ignored..”

The Office of the President recommended the Korea Communications Commission and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to prepare follow-up measures, such as amending laws for separate collection of license fees.

As a follow-up measure, it is likely to revise or delete the Enforcement Decree of the Broadcasting Act, which is the basis for the integrated collection, but the relevant ministries report it and the Cabinet meeting decides.

Since 1994, KBS subscription fees have been collected together with electricity rates for nearly 30 years.

The passport has been insisting on collecting this separately from the electricity bill since immediately following the launch of the Yoon Seok-yeol government.

“People’s dissatisfaction with the KBS license fee, which is integrated into electricity bills, is increasing. In the meantime, public broadcasting has been biased and unfair..”

“From the idea that KBS, dominated by the Democratic Party and the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, will trample on the public responsibility of public broadcasting and pursue a policy of tax extortion without the consent of the public, the public has no regard for it…”

The opposition party criticized the passport for taming KBS by pressing the license fee issue.

“I really never imagined that the day would come when the President’s office threatened public broadcasting with money. Are you trying to create ‘Thank You News’ by taking control of public broadcasting?”

KBS refuted, saying, “It is a serious issue that can damage the basis of public broadcasting,” and “the integrated license fee collection is an efficient way to maintain public broadcasting at a minimum cost.”
