A parent group expressed strong concerns regarding the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics Organizing Committee providing free condoms to participating athletes.
The National Federation of Parents’ Organizations issued a statement on the 23rd, criticizing the distribution of condoms at the Youth Olympic Games, which should be a place to cultivate a healthy body and a sound mind, as an act that undermines the spirit of the Olympic Games.
At the same time, he argued that it is very wrong for the International Olympic Committee to hand out condoms to teenagers and make lame excuses by saying that they are curious teenagers, and that if this happens once more, the Youth Olympic Games should be abolished.
Previously, the Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics organizing committee was distributing condoms at the athletes’ village to help participating athletes maintain safe sex lives. The organizing committee secured 3,000 condoms from the medical team and distributed them to the Gangneung-Wonju University Athletes’ Village (2,500) and Jeongseon High1 Athletes’ Village (500). It was placed at the medical room counter in each athlete’s village so that athletes might take it when needed.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) holds the position that condoms should be provided to youth Olympic participants who are at the peak of their sexual energy and curiosity.
In fact, the organizing committee of the 2018 Buenos Aires Summer Youth Olympics and the 2020 Lausanne Winter Youth Olympics also provided free condoms at the athletes’ village in line with this IOC policy.
