“The Controversial Testimony of Psychologist Serge Garcet in the March 22 Brussels Attacks Trial: Lawyers’ Reactions”

The lawyers of the defendants of the trial of the attacks of March 22, 2016 in Brussels were strongly critical, during their comments, with regard to the testimony of the psychologist and professor of criminology Serge Garcet (ULiège) before the Assize Court. Me Delphine Paci, Salah Abdeslam’s lawyer, notably described the intervention as “caricatural” and “little nuanced”.

“A speech that is not very scientific but rather ideological. Not very nuanced, very caricatural”, reacted the criminal lawyer. “Mr. Witness is able to tell us, following having conducted two-hour interviews, that people who have fallen into violent radicalism are finished, that it is a sacrificed generation. This speech is particularly dangerous, because it makes the bed of far-right speeches. We are told, in essence, that these young people, it is useless to work with them, because they are screwed anyway. I would ask you not to be naive and not to not retain this extremely caricatural presentation.”

“I am sad when I hear a discourse, however scientific, being so deterministic and coming to talk to us regarding a sacrificed generation. A psychologist coming to tell us that nothing can be done once the two plasticines are mixed”, regretted Me Nicolas Cohen, who defends Bilal El Makhoukhi. “Not everything that has been said is necessarily wrong, but it is biased.”

Me Jonathan De Taye, who represents Ali El Haddad Assufi, said that this debate was of little interest to him since his client was not radicalized. However, he warned the jury once morest such presentations.

For its part, the prosecution pointed out that the pattern of radicalization described by the witness corresponded to the course of several defendants.
