I find it a little difficult to understand the acrimony towards Lillard, who only employs a technique systematically used in this kind of case. If everyone uses it, it is rather the system that should be criticized than the players. One can rather criticize the use of such a technique because it will not be very useful here to dissuade the interlocutors who know well that it will play as well as possible whatever the place where it will land. This kind of tactic is quite useful when the player’s contract is short and there is a risk that he won’t extend, in which case the purchase would be way too expensive, but that’s not the case here. We can for example think of Leonard who wanted to leave Spurs to go to Los Angeles and who had made it clear that he would not extend if he was transferred elsewhere. The Raptors took him despite that, he had a great successful season there and he went free followingwards.
Afterwards, I admit that I always have a little trouble with this system where a player can be sent anywhere once morest his will (but hey, we can then criticize Lillard for having extended to reach a maximum to then decide to leave, but we can also think that if he had refused to extend he would have been criticized by the Blazers who would have clobbered him anywhere rather than seeing him go free).
Personally, I think the Lillard trade is going to take some time (not until August at the earliest, just because drafted players can’t be traded before then).
