The Controversial Saint Dominic Savio School: Ultra-Conservative Teaching and State Control Concerns

“A private Christian school instilling ultra-conservative and discriminating ideas in its students, without any state control and with a very real risk of sectarian drift”: PS MP Fatima Ahallouch paints a vitriolic portrait of the Saint school Dominique Savio (Mouscron). “It is a project which is already around thirty years old and quickly received the support of the former mayor of Mouscron, Jean-Pierre Detremmerie. Since then, the municipality has continued to support it by providing up to 10 full-time equivalents of municipal staff,” she explains. “When the socialists arrived in the majority, it was decided to gradually reduce the provision of personnel but in 2012, the new majority reversed course.”

A private school, therefore, but which would have benefited to date from more than three million euros from the city of Mouscron, without having to account for the teaching provided there. But this is not the only point that worries the socialist. She believes that the students enrolled in the school are subject to a form of indoctrination. “The founder of the school wrote a book last year called Let’s Save Our Children. This book shows a real shift in the project of Saint Dominic Savio. We can read there that the pill is comparable to an abortion, that divorce and homosexuality are condemnable and that it is urgent to set up a Catholic Evras”.

In this famous book, we can read that the director “does not find it more logical that students going to a Catholic school no longer receive quality teaching in accordance with the Gospel and the teaching of the Church.” .

We can also read, among other criticisms of the teaching provided in other schools, that family planning “enters schools to provide education contrary to purity.”

Contacted, the mayor of Mouscron, Brigitte Aubert referred us to Mathilde Vandorpe, member of Parliament for the Engagés. “I have nothing to hide but I no longer have anything to say on this subject,” the councilor told us.

For her part, Mathilde Vandorpe, who is a member of Dominique Savio’s board of directors, denies any misappropriation of public money. “This is not misappropriation. The philosophy of the non-profit organization has evolved over time. Following the generalization of Evras, there was a shift and I alerted the municipal authorities at that time -there. But there is no deception,” she says. “I have known this school for twenty years and I have always supported it fundamentally. There is total determination on the part of Fatima Ahallouch once morest a school where she has never set foot.”

An opinion that does not share, without great surprise, Fatima Ahallouch, who intends to contact the General Delegate for Children’s Rights. “We cannot tolerate schools like this going under the radar of the authorities and indoctrinating children with illegal ideas.”

An opinion that is also not shared by the Minister of Children Bénédicte Linard who asked the ONE to carry out an inspection of the establishment. Inspection which concluded that the recognition of the École de Devoirs Le Relais might no longer be maintained due, among other things, to “support for discriminatory and sectarian discourse.”
