The book promised revelations but it is more than expected for some… Omid Scobie, the author of the book in which two members of the royal family are said to have discussed the skin color of Harry and Meghan’s son , defended himself from everything “coup” , this Friday, December 1st.
We explain this controversy which has been agitating social networks and English-speaking media for several days.
A book quickly withdrawn from sale
During an event interview with Oprah Winfrey a year following their sensational departure for the United States in 2020, Harry and Meghan claimed that a member of the royal family had wondered, when she was pregnant, regarding the color of skin that their son Archie would have. They clarified that it was neither the queen nor her husband Prince Philip. This interview launched a lively debate in the United Kingdom on racism in the country and within the royal family.
The names of the two members of the royal family who allegedly had this discussion have been published in the Dutch version of a new book regarding the Windsors and written by renowned journalist close to the Sussex couple Omid Scobie. The book was quickly withdrawn from sale by the publisher but…
Friday December 1, many media, including the BBC, le Daily Mirror, le Sun, le New York Timesindicated that the two people mentioned in the book would be King Charles III and Kate, Princess of Wales.
“The Dutch publisher told us it was a translation error”
But the author, Omid Scobie, known to be close to Harry and Meghan, denied having published the names. “The English version of the book, the only one I know, the one on which I signed (…) is the book which does not have a name”he said Thursday evening on the BBC, in the Newsnight program, defending himself from everything “publicity stunt”.
“The Dutch publisher told us it was a translation error” he explained, saying to himself “hurt” by these “conspiracy theories”.
Translators reject accusations
The book’s two translators have denied any wrongdoing. According to the Daily Mail, Saskia Peeters claimed that the names appeared in the manuscript sent to her. “As a translator, I translate what I have in front of me,” she said.
“The names of the royals were there in black and white. I didn’t add them,” she continued, “I just did what I was paid to do”, “translate the book from English to Dutch”.
Omid Scobie refused to apologize to the royal family: “It’s not up to me to apologize, as I’m still trying to understand what happened.”
On Wednesday, television host Piers Morgan, very critical of Harry and Meghan, gave the names in his show “Piers Morgan uncensored”, explaining that this would allow “an open debate”. But he also said he didn’t believe ““Not that any member of the royal family has ever made racist remarks.” Buckingham Palace then said “consider all options” in response to the allegations.
According to Sunday Timesan agreement was reached providing in particular that Harry and Meghan no longer raise the subject, neither in the series which was dedicated to them by Netflix last year or in the prince’s autobiography.
